What's in a Name?

Hannah has interesting names for her toys. Her doll Emily was named when I was a little girl, and Almanzo was a suggestion from me, because we were reading "Farmer Boy" out loud at the time and Almanzo is of course the name of the farmer boy in the book. Nowadays though Hannah is naming her own toys.

The tiger in the picture above is named "Lion." At first I thought Hannah was getting confused about the tiger. I asked her what kind of animal he was and she said, "he's a tiger." When I asked her what his name was she said, "His name's Lion." Of course.

My aunt Catherine gave Hannah a little felt basket that looks like a chicken. Hannah immediately named it "Ernie" for some reason.

Hannah's Little People doll house is populated by "Lady" and "Phoneman" and "Baby-in-a-manger-bed." Seriously, that is what she calls the baby. Every time.

Sometimes toys get named after characters in books. I've already told the story of how Hannah's cat is named "Mog" after the children's book. Lately we've been reading Lynley Dodd's animal books so the dogs in our neighborhood that we see every day on our walks are called (by Hannah anyway) "Hairy MacLary" or "Muffin McLay" or "Bitzer Maloney" etc.

That is really funny, especially with Hannah naming the tiger "Lion"!!

It must be fun to hear her pronounce the longer names for the neighborhood dogs.

What a fantastic imagination she has! She looks like SUCH a big girl in that picture. Gosh, they are growing up too fast.

Kids are so funny. :) My girls like to make up names from scratch, if you will. Last week they both made construction paper kitties. Katie named her kitty "Poocoo" and Rachel's was "H.R.R.". ??? :P
